DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Storm chances will continue to be elevated for the next several days as tropical moisture streams into the region from the Gulf of Mexico. A broad area of low pressure just off the Florida coast has a very good chance of developing into the season’s next tropical system. There is a 70% chance it will become a tropical depression or storm in the next 48 hours. Over the next five days, there is an 80% chance of it becoming a tropical depression or storm.
No matter what develops in the northern Gulf later in the week, the direct impacts in the Wiregrass will be minimal. We can expect periods of heavy rain though. The main concern is going to be for the lower Mississippi River Valley. Upwards of 10 inches or more of rain will be expected. Even more in localized places in Louisiana, where landfall will be expected if this does indeed become an organized tropical system.
Take extra caution if your travel plans take you to Louisiana or southern Mississippi. Flash flooding and even storm surge flooding will be a concern.
