DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Over the next couple of days, afternoon storm chances will be lower that what we have been dealing with. The lower rain and storm chances along with slightly drier air will allow afternoon temperatures to warm into the middle to upper 90s. There will be enough moisture in the lower levels of the atmosphere for heat index temperatures to be over 100°F. Be sure to stay cool and hydrated along with taking plenty of breaks if you will be outdoors.
By the weekend, rain and storm chances will be higher again. Afternoon storm chances will be between 30 and 40%. A few storms will have potential to become strong to severe, but organized severe weather is not anticipated at this time. The main threat from any of the stronger storms will be wind in excess of 40 mph. With the higher storm chances again, temperatures will be a little closer to where they should be for this time of the year. We can expect highs in the lower 90s.
Any amount of rain we can get will help to reduce our rainfall deficit. Normally at this point of the year 26.93″ of rain. This year, Dothan Regional Airport has received just 15.61″, putting us nearly a foot below where we should be. Parts of the Wiregrass are classified as being in a “severe” drought.
