WICKSBURG, Ala (WDHN) — Heading into Thursday night, the Wicksburg Panthers held an area record of 7-0 and were one win away from completing their perfect season within the area.
All they needed to do was beat Daleville at home. The Panthers got the job done, winning 71-67 in a tightly contested game that went down to the final possessions.
However, it was a basket scored in the first quarter that many of the Wicksburg players will remember for some years.
With seven minutes gone in the game, Wicksburg junior guard, Devontae White scored his 8th point of the game which gave him 1,000 points for his career. A feat only three players have done in Wicksburg history.
“It was a special moment. That was a personal goal for me coming into the year. You know these guys push me through practice and I have to give them credit too,” White said Friday afternoon.
On the evening, White scored 23 points to lead all scorers in the game. Those points bring his career total to 1,015 points which is just 69 points behind Blake Wallace for the all-time leading scorer in Wicksburg men’s basketball history.
Starting since the 9th grade, White has not only grown physically and his skill set but also now as a junior he has learned how to become a leader.
“I definitely have gotten bigger and stronger and I feel like my leadership has gotten better as well,” White said.
It wasn’t by fate that White would hit this feat, according to Wicksburg head coach, Colby Thomley, White is the hardest working kid on the team.
“They say that if your best player is also your hardest worker than you got something special and I think that is it. I don’t think that anyone on our team would disagree with that. Devontae brings it everyday when he gets here and the results speak for themselves when he gets out there,” Thomley said.
Averaging double digits in points per game, White’s teammates knew he was going to eclipse the 1,000 point mark Thursday night and they wanted to be prepared.
“We knew once he got we were calling timeout. We had already talked to coach and when we called it everybody was excited and we are lucky to have him on our team,” said senior guard Sawyer Rivenbark.
This Wicksburg team has been red hot all season. Their 8-0 record in area play has earned them a chance to host the area tournament in a very competitive area.
