Two Troy defensive players make national watch lists

TROY, Ala (WDHN) — This week more national awards have released their preseason watch lists, and once again Troy Trojans have found themselves on the lists.

Dell Pettus has made the watch list for the Jim Thorpe award which honors the best defensive back in the country.

Pettus had a great freshman season last year where he averaged six tackles in his ten starts. He recorded three or more tackles in the final 11 games of the season all while playing the second most snaps on defense with 668 over his 12 games.

Pettus led the Trojans as opponents completed just 65.4 percent of passes targeted against him.

Garnering more national recognition this week was linebacker, Carlton Martial. He was placed on the Butkus award watchlist for best linebacker in the country as well as the Bronko Nagurski watchlist for best defensive player in the nation.

The Mobile, Alabama native has now found himself on numerous watch lists which include the two aforementioned as well as the Bednarik award.

Martial has also been added to preseason All-America lists as well. Walter Camp placed him on the first team and Phil Steele placed him on the fourth team All-American list.
