TROY, Ala (WDHN) — On Monday, the Maxwell Football Club released their first Chuck Bednarik watch list and Trojan linebacker, Carlton Martial, made the list.
The Bednarik award is given to the outstanding defensive player in the country at the FBS level.
This comes after Martial had a record setting year. He became the 12th player and first underclassmen to have over 100 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and three interceptions.
In 2019, Martial recorded 126 tackles, which is the most by a Troy player since the turn of the century. He also had 18.5 tackles for loss which is the fifth most in program history.
He was the only player in the entire FBS to rank in the top eight in both tackles and tackles for loss.
The Redshirt Junior was already named as a Walter Camp preseason First Team All-American. Last season, he was ranked as the 35th best player in the country by Pro Football Focus.
