ABBEVILLE, Ala (WDHN) — The team of the year honor has been a tough one hand out, three weeks ago, there was a clear cut favorite, it was at the time unbeaten, G.W. Long. Then the Rebels took a trip to Henry County to play the Abbeville Yellow Jackets, a one loss team, hungry to taste a region title.
Abbeville defeated G.W. Long to improve to 8-1 in their final game of the season and with the win the Yellow Jackets won 2A region two.
The Yellow Jackets have been led by a great senior core which includes quarterback Martavious Glanton, who also was a player of the year candidate, then their leader on defense, Rico Dozier. Also, Abbeville has seen great production from Martavious’ brother Randy, and their big guy up front, Arthur Thomas.
But the talent runs deep for Abbeville, which is why they were able to beat G.W. Long, Elba and Ariton in a four game stretch.
“I am just proud of them, any honor that someone recognized their efforts on the field, they are the ones that are making the plays. I appreciate my coaches for putting in the position to make the plays too,” Head Coach Labrian Stewart said.
Another factor in deciding them in team of the year was the fact that they did not have a head coach until mid-July, which was just weeks out from their jamboree game against Ashford. Nonetheless, the team and Stewart meshed quickly and hit fire in the backhalf of the season.
The Yellow Jackets started 3-0 on the year, then lost to Geneva County in week four, and then reeled out five straight wins.
One of the best parts of this team, is the fact that the coaches celebrate the players hard work. When the Jackets shut out an opponent, coach Stewart brings in donuts for the team during their Monday film session. This season, he has had to buy his guys the breakfast treat four times for the four shutouts they earned.
Abbeville will put their 8-1 record to the test this Friday night when they host 6-4 Thorsby.
