(WDHN) — In this Friday night’s football contest, there’s an interesting non-region contest at Alva Hawke Stadium in western Geneva County between Samson and Kinston.
With the two schools less than ten miles apart, a natural rivalry for Samson head coach Jason Wambles takes on greater significance. From 2009 through 2015, the Kinston native coached at his alma mater. In fact, he’s one of the Bulldogs all-time winningest coaches.
He spent a year at Excel but now heads up the Tigers’ program. Wambles said his team’s game against Kinston is important, but he discounts any personal animosity.
“They have a good team. A lot of good young men on that squad, but I’m a Tiger now. It’s a big game and a big rivalry on Highway 52,” Wambles said.
Samson will be the season opener for Kinston.
