Rehobeth’s Donny Gillan throws in the towel

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — For the last two decades, Donny Gillan has been either an assistant or head football coach in the Wiregrass.

In 2018, he took over a young Rehobeth team and was winless at 0-10. In 2019, he changed the course and the Rebels went 7-3 with an appearance in the playoffs.

Following the COVID-19 layoff, coach Gillan says he doesn’t have the same passion to be on the sidelines. It’s time for someone with more energy to take over.

However, the time at Rehobeth has been great, but its time to hang up the whistle.

“I just believe its part of God’s plan as its time to relinquish and my time to end and trying to be obedient to God. And, I feel coaches have so much shelf life, and mine has drawn an end and time for someone else to grab it and run with it,” Gillan said.

Four of the five schools in the Houston County school district will have new head football coaches when the 2020 season starts.

The job is now listed online.
