The Dothan Eagle Super 12 banquet was held at Flowers Hospital. The Eagle sportswriters chose the two athletes across the Wiregrass in baseball, softball, golf, and track and field.
2019’s top baseball and softball players of the year are both from Class 2A state champions the G.W. Long Rebels in Skipperville. In addition, Pitcher Matt Snell
and pitcher Libby Baker both plan to attend Troy University next fall. Being from a small school, both athletes feel the close-knit community in northeastern
Dale County breeds success on the athletic field.
“I always enjoyed both pitching and hitting. I’ve been doing that since Dixie League ball in Dothan,” Matt Snell said.
“The goal was not necessarily being an award winner, but being selected as the best in Alabama and the best I can be,” Libby Baker.
Providence Christian graduate and future University of Alabama Golfer Thomas Ponder was chosen as the top golfer. The boy’s track and field award goes to Dothan High’s Nathan Cooper and the girls’ track recognition is given to Margaret Crim of Providence Christian.
