BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WDHN) —Heading into Wednesday, two Wiregrass school were alive in the state volleyball tournament. Those two teams were: G.W. Long at 2A and Houston Academy in 3A.
G.W. Long had a chance to repeat as champions, after the advancing to the state finals yesterday. In the title match, the Rebels faced Addison from the North region.
Addison took game one with a score of 25-13 but then G.W. Long would respond, winning game two 20 to 25. Sadly, Addison would go on to win the next two games and with that the state championship as well.
G.W. long finishes second and ends their season with an impressive 32-5 record.
Up in the 3A, Houston Academy started their run at a state ring.
In the quarterfinals, the Raiders faced Fyffe in four sets taking the first two sets in the match. Then, the Red Devils would get one bac k before Houston Academy ended it in the fourth set.
The game scores were 25-21, 25-23. 24-26, 25-19!
The Raiders would move on to play the Plainview Bears, and again Houston Academy would jump out to an early lead winning the first set 25-21. Then, Plainview would go on to win three straight sets and also finishing the match with scores of 27-25, 25-14, and 25-18.
The Raiders finished the year with a final record of 27 wins 17 losses.
