NEW BROCKTON, Ala (WDHN) — The New Brockton Gamecocks are another Wiregrass school making a move in classifications as they rise up to the 3A level.
Now in the second season under coach Zack Holmes and this year the Gamecocks will be playing their home games at Enterprise’s Wildcat Stadium. With the move up to 3A and the renovations of the one million dollar stadium, coach Holmes thinks it is a great time to be Gamecock.
“We are excited, with the move up to 3A which also means our community is growing. It is a good time to be Gamecock with everything that is going on,” Holmes said.
New Brockton has made the playoffs for six straight seasons but only one of those times have they passed the first round. This is a point of emphasis for Holmes and he believes a deep playoff run starts with the work in the regular season.
“We want to be a team that win playoff games, in the last ten years we have only won one. You do that by finishing better in the region, cause that first round game if it is at your place makes it a whole lot easier to win,” Holmes said.
The Gamecocks return Kaden Cupp, who heads into his junior season at quarterback. He had a strong end to the 2019 season but now in 2020 New Brockton will expect him to play at a high level all season.
“He has worked as hard as anyone this off season, since the end of the season to now he has gained twenty four pounds of muscle. What has been fun this summer to see has been his mental growth and his control of the offense. I am excited to see what he does this year,” Holmes said about his quarterback.
In the wide out position, coach Holmes is looking for guys like Colton Marsh, CJ Wilkerson, and Avery Weed to step up and take the dominant role that Russell Weeks had last season.
To start the season, New Brockton has a home game against Cottonwood and then they will take on Georgiana on the road in week two.
