GENEVA, Ala (WDHN) — As August continues to quickly approach, we begin our previews of football teams in the Wiregrass.
To start the fun, we take a look at the Geneva County Bulldogs.
Last season, coach Jim Bob Striplin’s team went 4-6 and missed the playoffs but that doesn’t mean the team was producing.
The Bulldogs set school records in both good and bad categories. They scored a total of 447 points throughout the season, averaging near 45 points a game.
In the same breath, the Bulldogs’ defense gave up a school record of 405 points and in a game against Barbour Co. the team gave up 70 points, also a school worst.
However, Striplin’s team has a lot to be looking forward to. One of the best players in the Wiregrass, maybe even the state, is returning and will play both sides of the ball.
Emmanuel Henderson, a rising junior, is looking to mirror his previous season where he rushed for nearly two hundred yards a game, accumulating 3200 all-purpose yards.
Henderson currently has 22 college offers to play football at the next level, yet he is more focused on growing his current team into a winning squad.
“More of being a greater teammate, just playing hard as I can in the game, give it all I got, I just grind in the weight room, get extra sprints in, stuff like that, anything that will help the team get better,” Henderson said.
Geneva County has their first game of the season against Wicksburg and for the 2020 season, the defense will be the tell tale sign of their success.
