GENEVA COUNTY, Ala (WDHN) — This week’s Extra Point Game of the Week ventures out to Hartford when the Geneva County Bulldogs host the Abbeville Yellow Jackets.
This 2A region two game brings a clash of undefeated teams as the (3-0) Bulldogs and the (3-0) Yellow Jackets fight for the top spot in their region.
If that doesn’t make the game compelling enough, tomorrow’s fixture will feature five star recruit, Emmanuel Henderson of Geneva County, going up against what may be the toughest defense in the Wiregrass.
Through three games, Henderson has racked up 743 yards on the ground while adding 11 touchdowns, yes in only three games. In fact, Henderson scored more points by himself in his game against Ariton than Abbeville has allowed all season.
The Yellow Jackets have shut out three of their four opponents thus far including their scrimmage game against Ashford. A main reason for that lack of scoring, is their ability to stop the run and it all starts with the anchor of their defense, Senior Rico Dozier.
“One of the biggest concerns that we do have is their defense. These guys are really good and do not allow a lot of points,” Geneva County Coach Jim Bob Striplin said. “It starts with linebacker Rico Dozier, he is all over the field and has a great nose for the ball.
Dozier’s ability to find the ball is probably the reason he is averaging fourteen tackles a game this season. His performance Friday will play a big part of stopping Geneva County’s rushing attack.
But for Abbeville coach LaBrian Stewart, worrying too much about what Geneva County does will actually work against them.
“What we are trying to do as coaches is teach them, lets compete with ourselves. If we get too caught up in who we play and what they have done, we will lose focus of what we do,” coach Stewart said.
So as much as Friday’s game will come down to the Bulldogs offense versus the Yellow Jackets defense, a key contributor to this game will be how Abbeville signal caller, Martavious Glanton plays. He much like Henderson has been on a tear this season, leading the Abbeville offense is touchdowns scored.
The winner of this game is going to be taking a firm hold of the region standings and this region may just be the toughest in the area now that Elba has entered it. As of now Geneva County, Abbeville and G.W. Long are undefeated with Elba and Ariton right on their heels.
