SKIPPERVILLE, Ala (WDHN) — In Scott Horne’s 11th year as head coach, the G.W. Long Rebels are executing like clockwork. After being idle the first two weeks of the year, G.W. Long has won the first three games of their season, now sitting at 3-0.
Using the momentum of last year could be a reason why the Rebels are playing so well but with the affects of the coronavirus, that can’t be said. This Rebels team is a legitimate contender in 2A.
Their 2020 got off to a great start when they beat Elba to kick off the year, and beating a program like that certainly boosts momentum.
“You know when you start off with a team of their caliber and tradition, that is tough game out of the gate and if you lose that one, things can go the other way quick. But, I think we build momentum off of that and we have kind of gotten better every single week,” said coach Horne.
That win is important, not only because it got G.W. Long off to a good start but will also speak volumes when it comes time to crown a region champ. Currently 2A region two has four teams all within a game of each other.
G.W. Long is tied with Geneva County as both are 3-0 in region play. Then right behind them are Abbeville and Elba sitting at 2-1 in the region.
The Rebels will play Geneva County and Abbeville in back to back weeks in their last two games, and that will most likely decide the region.
But coach Horne has emphasized to his kids that taking care of business each week will pay off, as opposed to looking ahead.
“Those two teams are at the top of the region so they can catch your attention but we have just have to make sure our kids stay focused on what they are doing and not look ahead,” Horne said.
This week the Rebels are taking on Daleville in a non-region game.
