Dothan Civic Center hosts national bodybuilding competition

DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — This past Saturday, the Dothan Civic Center retired their strict “No Gun” policy as the 2020 NPC BodyBe1 national qualifier bodybuilding event was held there.

With over 100 contestants spanning numerous classes, the event was stolen by the presence of one of the sport’s greats.

Dexter “The Blade” Jackson has won the most professional competitions in bodybuilding history. Jackson made his first appearance in Alabama this weekend and he gave a seminar at Dothan Athletic Club shortly after the prequalifying round.

The seminar can briefly summed up by the amount of dedication it takes to be the best at any sport. But in the case of bodybuilding, it takes passion, discipline and most importantly, it takes years to not only build the muscle but to build the respect of the industry.

Jackson spoke on the amount of discipline it takes to be a bodybuilder.

“Discipline in this sport is everything. The diet can break you, the diet is 85 to 90 percent…working out is just ten percent. The diet is everything,” Jackson said.

Just like any sport, the mentality of the athlete must be just as strong and prepared as the body. For these competitors, knowing your body is key.

“The mentality when you are backstage before you walk on stage is to present your best package. A lot of people don’t understand just because you get up there flexing…you do not know how hard it is,” Jackson said.

Jackson was able to give the crowd of about 600 a short tease as to what the best looks like. During an intermission, Jackson showed off his body that has won him a world high five Arnold Classic titles.
