BARBOUR COUNTY, Ala (WDHN) — The Barbour County School System has canceled all sports for the school year approaching, according to Barbour County football coach, Chad Martin.
This is not just a decision for fall sports but also winter and spring as well. This is the first decision of the like in the Wiregrass and will affect sports from basketball, football to even tennis or soccer in the spring.
Though the state has been allowing schools to practice on campus, Barbour County had been withholding students from going on school grounds due to a virus outbreak in the area.
There is no plan in place or any news on the return of school or how the school will approach the upcoming academic year.
Last season, their boys basketball team was the runner up at the 2A level and surely were a contender now being at 1A, however the decision of course was made with safety of the students in mind.
Martin took control of the squad and he has tried to right the ship of a program that has not won a game in some seasons.
With that being said, Martin said that his team this year was a lot of freshmen and sophomores but for the small amount of seniors on the team, they will miss out on their last chance to represent Barbour County High.
