AHSAA hosts virtual meeting with Department of Education


MONTGOMERY, Ala (WDHN) — On Tuesday morning, the AHSAA and the Fall Sports and Football Coaches Committees met virtually to discuss the upcoming school year and how the Coronavirus will impact sports.

ALSDE State Superintendent Dr. Erick Mackey gave his update concerning the road to reopening schools. With the latest data present the meeting noted the cautions and worries of the given plan.

AHSAA Executive Director Steve Savarese enlisted input from the committee members concerning options for fall sports play moving forward.

The AHSAA plans to present any recommendations to the Central Board of Control for review and approval at the Board’s next meeting, which is planned for July 22nd.

Savarese had this to say about the recent spike of cases in the state.

“Our world would be in better shape concerning the recent increase in COVID cases if everyone followed the health and safety examples our coaches and administrators provide and practice daily.”
