World War II veteran honored at Hits for Heroes ceremony

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — On Saturday at Northcutt Field, the “Hits for Heroes” held an opening ceremony before the ESCC and Wallace baseball game.

The crowd got a big thrill as Dothan resident Earl Wesley Richards, 99, threw out the first pitch at the game. During World War II, Richards fought in six major battles against Nazi Germany.

One of the battles Richards fought in included “The Battle of the Bulge” in Belgium. His unit suffered nearly 4,000 troops killed. After the war, he started a family in a very rural Dothan.

“It was rough back then, you had to get right with it. I didn’t expect anything like this,” Richards said.

Earl received the bronze star medal for his service in destroying Hitler’s Third Reich.
