WASHINGTON COUNTY, Fla. (WDHN) – The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that killed a woman and a child.
The single-vehicle wreck happened on Lucas Lake Road in southern Washington County, about eight miles south of Vernon, Fla., Friday night around 10:30pm. Investigators say the vehicle was traveling eastbound on the road when the driver “failed to negotiate a right curve in the roadway and traveled off the paved portion of the roadway and onto the shoulder.”
The sport utility vehicle left the roadway and overturned, hitting a tree. The vehicle came to rest on its side.
A 34-year-old woman and an eight-year-old boy, both from Chipley, Fla., died in the wreck.
Four other children in the vehicle, aged 6, 11, 13, and 14, were hurt with injuries ranging from serious to critical.
The FHP continues investigating the wreck.
