UPDATE: Hurts is on the field against Arkansas State with 1:15 left in the 1st Q.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — Rumors have been swirling that Alabama QB Jalen Hurts’ and family want to redshirt with the new rule that a player can play up to four games.
Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban addressed the starting QB situation on Labor Day, saying Tua Tagovailoa would start against Arkansas State, and that they would “use Jalen’s skill set in the future to help however we feel that he can benefit the team.”
“Tua is head and shoulders above what Hurts can do,” CBS 42 Sports’ College Football Analyst Mike Johnson said. “I don’t see Tua relinquishing this job anytime soon.”
As for Jalen and the redshirt rumors, if they’re true:
“I don’t think he plays today,” said Johnson. “If they’re planning on redshirting and he only has three games left, maybe you keep him on the shelf in case Tua gets dinged up at some point in the year, maybe you have to start Jalen against Mississippi State or LSU, if he does want to redshirt, and that’s what he’s brought to the table, I think you sit him down today, you allow Mac Jones to play the entire second half and you get that ground game going, that offensive line going, let Jalen take a step back from the team and decide what he wants to do.”
Alabama kicks off against Arkansas State at Bryant-Denny Stadium at 2:30 p.m.
