What’s Good in the Neighborhood: Turkeys from Heaven

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — A Wiregrass group of residents is working to make sure families that are in need have a bountiful Christmas dinner; they call the operation Turkeys from Heaven.

“We thought let’s cook a turkey and make a meal that we considered your standard Christmas meal,” said Turkeys from Heaven organizer Harry Hall.

Since 1997, the Hall family’s Christmas has been a little different than most.

“Grills pulled up everywhere and then we were blocking traffic and people were dropping turkeys off in my driveway and I had coolers and just a mountain of birds,” Hall explained.

This year, Turkeys from Heaven will ensure 2,000 meals will be delivered to families that are in need this holiday season.

“That’s turkeys delivered to families with green bean casseroles, rolls, dessert, cranberry, all of it,” Hall said.

All of this is done by Wiregrass residents.

“People who live here join in and buy the turkeys at Piggly Wiggly, they fund it online through PayPal, they show up to cook,” Hall said.

Although lots of people will be helping, Turkeys from Heaven still needs your help to make sure each family gets their Christmas dinner.

“Piggly Wiggly is our store that’s partnering with us, they’re over on Montgomery highway,” Hall said. “You go through the line and tell them I want to buy a turkey from heaven. They’ve got a little sign up right there and you just walk through and pay. It’s $17 and you leave it there.”

And while the operation is meant to provide meals, it’s also meant to serve love.

“Christmas is about a gift to us, that was Jesus, and about the gift we’re supposed to give other people,” Hall explained. “It’s really a way for the Christmas miracle to manifest right here in Dothan.”

The group will begin cooking the turkeys Sunday, December 22; delivery will begin Monday, December 23, at noon. Visit the Turkeys from Heaven Facebook page to learn more.
