DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) – Cherry Street AME Church in Dothan is hosting a ‘Celebration of Buffalo Soldiers’ on February 23 at 2:30 p.m. The guest speaker for the event will be Pastor Charlie Smith and the event will take place in the Oasis Worship Center at the church.

Buffalo Soldiers were African American soldiers who mainly served on the Western frontier following the American Civil War. In 1866, six all-black cavalry and infantry regiments were created after Congress passed the Army Organization Act. The main purpose of the Buffalo Soldiers was to help control the Native Americans of the Plains, capture cattle rustlers and thieves and protect settlers, stagecoaches, wagon trains and railroad crews along the Western front.

Cathay Williams of Independence, Missouri; who disguised herself as a man; was the only female Buffalo Soldier.
