DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Houston Academy had a Veterans Day ceremony Thursday with the band and students coming together to thank and honor veterans.

“Every year we try to do something to express our thanks to our veterans, and so this year we decided to do a program and welcome our veterans,” Houston Academy teacher Laurie Gilmore said.

Students shared personal stories about veterans in their families and veterans in attendance loved the enthusiasm they showed.

“If all schools would have ceremonies like these, then the younger students would have more patriotism for the United States,” Army Col. Lee C. Smith Jr. said.

The Houston Academy band played each branch of the military’s service anthem to honor them.

There was a table set up that had a variety of items, each representing different values.

The empty chair depicts all unknown veterans that are not here, and one veteran expressed his gratitude for the band.

“It’s just gives me a smile on my face to hear the Star-Spangled Banner and know that it’s something that will always be special,” Marine 1st. Lt. Buddy Wax said.
