DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Wayne Farms, a chicken plant on the east side of Ross Clark Circle, had an acid leak early Wednesday morning.

16 workers were exposed to the chemical leak, but only two people were hospitalized. Dothan Firefighters responded to the scene within minutes while the entire plant was cleared.

“The safety personal let us know they had a leak in one of the buildings of the plant property. Our team went in and was able to locate the acid in one of the buildings,” Deputy Fire Chief Etheridge said.

According to a plant representative, one person inhaled the acid requiring a trip to the hospital. The other person involved was the deliverer of the acid product.

“Apparently a contractor delivering some industrial chemical they were a chemical reaction and we are still investigating the cause,” Human Resource Specialist Frank Singleton said.

The leak happened during orientation for a group of new hires.

“It’s overwhelming, but nothing is going to stop my first day, I’m very excited to be here,” Stephanie Weatherington said.

The Dothan Fire Department is working with management to contain the situation.

“We cleaned up the area and reopening the plant and expected operation as usual and the clean up will be completed, or is completed and we will go back to operations soon,” Singleton said.

The two people are expected to recover.
