BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - Transportation Security Administration agents found a loaded gun at a security checkpoint in the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport Thursday morning.
Around 5 a.m., agents discovered a loaded Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun in a passenger's carry-on bag. TSA alerted police who took the bag and escorted the passenger out of the checkpoint area.
Firearms may be transported in checked baggage if they are in a proper carrying case and are unloaded. However, guns are prohibited in carry-on bags.
This is the 13th firearm discovered at the Birmingham Airport this year.
