TROY, Alabama – Troy indoor track and field is set to begin its 2018 campaign Friday in the BSC Indoor Icebreaker at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

After losing two of the more decorated athletes in program history – Zach Douglas and Corina Wieser-Cox – last season, the Trojans will look to the new upperclassmen to bring success.

On the men’s side, sprinter Hakim Montgomery, jumper Titus Sizemore and thrower Michael Alvernaz will lead Troy. Sprinter Niata Alexander and thrower Jaevyn Wortham aim to spark the Trojan women.

Several athletes have represented Troy at the NCAA East Preliminaries at least once in the past two seasons. In 2016, Wortham advanced all the way to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., and garnered All-American Honorable Mention honors.

The Trojans saw success in the 2017 season and received several league awards throughout the year. Zach Douglas was named Sun Belt Field Athlete of the Year for his success in the shot put and discus events. Hakim Montgomery earned Sun Belt Track Athlete of the Week awards twice – once during the indoor season and once in the outdoor season.

QUOTABLE

“We’ve been training and preparing for the past three months,” Troy track and field director Marc Davis said. “I just wanted to give our student-athletes an outlet and a competitive release before the Christmas break. I think we’re in good shape and I’m excited about where we are, across the board.”

NOTABLE

• All but one of Troy’s seven indoor meets will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex – including the Sun Belt Indoor Championships in February. The lone trip away from Birmingham will be to the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.

• The December 1 meet marks the earliest start in Troy’s track and field history. The next meet is set for January 12.

• Five returning Trojans have NCAA postseason experience entering this year. Junior Hakim Montgomery has earned a trip in each of his first two seasons.
