EUFAULA, Ala. (WDHN) — Ora Ricks woke up to a nightmare just before the sun rose Saturday morning.
Ricks heard her now-deceased son’s cries for help as he was being killed by the mother of his child in Ricks’ home at Chattahoochee Courts Apartment complex in Eufaula.
“About 2:30, I hear something,” she said. “My son was coming in the room to me, and I was asleep, and she was stabbing him in the back as he was coming in there, and he kicked the bed. That’s how I woke up. I said what’s wrong? And he said, ‘Mama please help me. She’s trying to kill me.'”
Randy Earl Smith, 36, suffered multiple stab wounds all over his body. He was transferred to Medical Center Barbour where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 5:10 am Saturday morning.
The suspect, Latonya Grubbs, 36, of Eufaula fled the scene of the crime but was arrested a short time later.
“And she got the knife out of my kitchen,” Ricks said. “The same knife they used to barbecue with; that’s what she got and took it with her.”
Grubbs is currently being held at the Eufaula City Jail where she awaits a bond hearing.
One police spokesperson said there were already some issues that were being worked out before the attack.
“There was some history of the two of them having some domestic issues in the past that were being hashed out in court, but I’m not sure if that was going to culminate today,” Eufaula Police Sgt. Donald Brown said. “In Eufaula, it is an uncommon thing. Murder is just not something that happens here all of the time.”
Grubbs and Smith have a five-month-old daughter together who is currently in Rick’s care.
The cause of the altercation that led to Eufaula’s second murder of the year is still under investigation.
