ASHFORD, Ala. (WDHN) — A video has been released showing what lead to the fatal shooting in Ashford over the weekend.
Officers said it happened at a large home on Harrison Street.
According to reports, officers were called out to the home earlier that evening for a non-emergency. Hours later, they returned to find that Tray Barnes, 20, had died from a gunshot wound.
“Once you pulled the trigger it’s too late you can’t take it back, and so it’s just a loss for both families, the family who lost their child and then (the) family whose son is incarcerated,” Ashford resident Jimmy Weems said.
A video of the incident, which we cannot show, has circulated showing what happened.
In the video, it appears that Barnes and suspect Deonte Latarus Gilmore were in the middle of a fight. At one point, Barnes picked up a television and dropped it on Gilmore, kicking him afterward.
Gilmore then gets up, pulls a gun out, and fires it while falling backward. Both Barnes and Gilmore then flee the room, at which point the clip ends.
Gilmore is now booked in the Houston County Jail on a $500,000 bond for murder.
“It’s a sad day in the city of the Ashford, and especially among our young black boys, it’s just a sad day,” Weems said.
The Houston County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation. Per HCSO protocol, information may only officially be released by Sheriff Donald Valenza himself, who was out of town and unable to speak with us.
