DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — A child was left in a car at Sam’s Club in Dothan Saturday, according to police.
“Saturday around lunchtime, officers responded to Sam’s Club to a report of a child locked in the vehicle that was not running and the windows up,” Dothan Police Lieutenant Lynn Watkins said. “The officers got there and found the child in the car, were able to get the child from the vehicle.”
The child was left in the car by his grandfather Jamicheal Williams Saturday around 11 a.m.
“The owner of the vehicle and grandfather of the child (were) found later, and we have charged him with torture/willful abuse of a child,” Watkins said.
Alabama ranks 13th in the nation when it comes to children dying in hot cars since 1995. A lot of people find this unacceptable and think the parents in these incidents need to be more responsible.
“You have to take your baby with you,” Dothan resident Laura Stakelum said. “Children, animals in the car, that is just, I don’t have words to explain.”
The child, in this case, will be fine. Three children have died inside a hot car in Alabama this year.
The most recent death happened in Athens, Alabama.
“The child’s well being should be the first thing on your mind,” Watkins said. “In this instance the child will be ok, and like I said was treated for dehydration.”
