COFFEE COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — Its been nearly a decade since a state-of-the-art tire processing plant opened at the Coffee County regional landfill.
Today, the Dothan Eagle reported the facility may temporarily close due to market conditions. The tire shreds produced by the machinery would be used for the foundation to child playground equipment.
A six-million dollar Alabama Department of Environmental grant paid the lion share expense of building the tire shredder. The state looked at the machinery as an answer to cleaning-up illegal tire dumps throughout the Wiregrass.
