Suspected car thief captured after law enforcement and driving technology combine

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — A suspected car thief was captured as a result of law enforcement and driving technology teaming up.

Daishawn Demetrius King, 18, is behind bars after reportedly stealing a vehicle out of an Enterprise Dollar General parking lot. Houston County Sheriff deputies and Dothan police officers apprehended King approximately 30 miles away from the Dollar General.

King was booked into the Coffee County Jail with a 1st Degree Theft of Property charge. But that outcome might have been more difficult to achieve without the help of technology.

While many people know OnStar for helping drivers in emergency situations, OnStar also helps police officers catch suspects.

“They (OnStar) also have the stolen vehicle assist and they can actually pinpoint where the location of your vehicle is and slow the vehicle down,” explained Action Buick GMC sales consultant Cheryl Reynolds.

Through OnStar’s vehicle slowdown system advisors can track a vehicle using satellite GPS and force it to stop.

“They actually slow the vehicle down to a stop and they can actually do that so then the vehicle doesn’t get totally destroyed,” Reynolds said.

In order to use OnStar drivers must subscribe to the service. Plans cost between $150 to $350 dollars per year.
