Soldier charged in raping of Auburn University student


AUBURN, Ala. (WDHN) – A U.S. soldier has been arrested for allegedly raping an Auburn University student.

On Monday, 27-year-old Ryan Charles Petro of Fort Bragg, was taken into custody by Auburn police and charged with five counts of first-degree rape.

The female victim, a 19-year-old Auburn University student, reported being sexually assaulted at a local hotel by Petro; which allegedly occurred in May 2018.

Petro, who had been deployed to Afghanistan, was arrested by U.S. Army Criminal Investigations Division Agents on Sept. 16, 2019. He was then turned over to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina.

Petro waived extradition and was transported to Alabama and booked into the Lee County Jail. His bond was set at $500,000. This case remains under investigation.
