SLOCOMB, Ala. (WDHN) — Slocomb Fire and Rescue held its annual ‘Fill the Boot’ drive fundraiser which usually takes place Memorial Day weekend.
The boot drive started in 2016 and it normally goes on for two days — Friday and Saturday. This year, the drive took place for one day due to the department raising over $10,000. Therefore, the department reached a comfortable goal and ended the drive a day early.
Chief Kyle Hovey says he’s thankful for the support of all of those who contributed and cant wait to purchase new equipment.
“One of the things the money will be used for is to update the radios in our fire trucks. The radios in it now are extremely old and became inadequated. We’re gonna upgrade those radios and hopefully go to a digital trucking radio system in the near future,” Chief Hovey said.
Chief Hovey also says the leftover money will be used to purchase some new wildland fire equipment.
