Suspect identified in armed robbery at Dothan Piggly Wiggly

UPDATE:

The suspect has been identified Ellis Lee Gibson. He faces charges for first-degree robbery and third-degree robbery.

Gibson reportedly tried to cut the manager with a knife when he tried to stop Gibson from leaving, but the suspect missed.

He kicked the manager in the leg in another escape attempt but was held at gunpoint by employees until officers arrived.

In addition to the robbery at the Piggly Wiggly, Gibson is also charged in the robbery of a woman in a wheelchair Sunday on Headland Avenue.

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — A frightening moment this afternoon at a Dothan grocery store after an armed robbery started as a shoplifting attempt at the Piggly Wiggly on Montgomery Highway.

According to Lt. Rachel David when loss prevention interfered, the suspect presented a weapon.

The man then took off from the store and was arrested by Dothan Patrol Officers who responded to the call.

The suspect has not been identified and no formal charges have been filed at this point.
