In 2010, Shekinah Chapter #899, of the Order Eastern Star, started a back to school drive where school supplies are donated to families in need.
Last year, 300 backpacks full of school supplies were given out.
“This is our ninth year doing this, and it’s for the community, so we’re out there to help the children in the community, and this is in enterprise and that’s our service is giving back to the community,” Charlene Franklin said.
Shekinah chapter members donated money and supplies out of pocket as well as hold local fundraisers to raise money for the supplies. Past Worthy Matron, Lisa, Mallory, called the good deed heartwarming.
“One of the little girls, she came to get a bag, and we also provide lunch for them. She sat her bag down and asked for an hot-dog for her parents, which really touched our heart because she was looking out for herself and her family. In order for us to do this, we have to get out and fundraise. It was such a warm feeling,” Lisa Mallory said.
The chapter consists of around 28 members including both active duty and retired military, and volunteers who help with the back to school drive.
“It’s nice, you know, nice that everyone can come together and do this and have this fundraiser and just give back. It keeps the kids happy, we get with the parents and the guardians because the children are our future,” Franklin said.
Mallory said the organization is all about charity, and they are able to give back to the community.
“We not only give back to the enterprise area, but we also give back to the whole wiregrass area. We reach out to other organizations that we know need help, and we make it our business to get there and help them in different ways which we can,” Mallory said.
