Senator Chesteen promotes bill to ease tax burdens on Alabamians in armed services

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — State senator Donnie Chesteen has pre-filed a bill for the 2020 legislative session.

The bill would allow Alabamians in the armed forces that are serving outside the state and have the ability to claim an income tax a deduction on their Alabama state tax bill.

Right now, out of state service members are currently unable to deduct military pay and allowances for the income tax return they file to the state of Alabama.

Senator Chesteen spoke about why this bill is important to him.

“We have so many members in the military in the state of Alabama. If you will look at the deployments that have taken place in the last few years, Alabama’s among the nation’s leaders in members of the military that are deployed,” Chesteen said.

The bill would also require military members to annually communicate their current place of residence to the Alabama Department of Revenue.
