MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WDHN) — A bill put forward by Rep. Victor Gaston could help improve voting rights for the physically impaired.

Under current law, anyone who believes their physical disability will prevent them from making it to the polls can ask for an absentee ballot.

House Bill 174 would simplify the process by putting physically disabled people on a permanent absentee voter list, allowing them to automatically receive a ballot in the mail.

The bill also establishes a procedure for application and how the state can verify the person’s identity.
