MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WDHN) — Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said if undocumented immigrants are counted in the 2020 census, it could impact seats in Congress.

Marshall is suing the federal government to stop the count of undocumented people. He said having everyone count gives places that encourage sanitary cites more representatives in Congress.

“If you can not vote and you’re in this country illegally, we don’t believe as a matter of law that person needs to be counted,” he said. “States that encourage sanctuary cities shouldn’t be rewarded with additional influence in Congress.”

The census count will begin next April.
