Police: Couple involved in ‘raccoon’ shooting were ‘extremely intoxicated’

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Catherine Arlene Fernandez is behind bars after she allegedly told authorities she tried to shoot a raccoon, but the bullet ricochetted, hitting her in the leg and her significant other.

Fernadez told authorities the imaginary raccoon attempted to enter their home through their back door — prompting her to shoot it.

“Once units arrived, and those two were transported to the hospital, based upon her initial story, the evidence at the scene were not adding up to what their story was,” Lt. Doug Magill said.

According to Magill, the couple was under the influence at the time of the shooting.

“Once investigators made contact with both, they were extremely intoxicated on some kind of narcotics,” he said.

According to reports, Fernandez fired a gun and hit her lover in the left before shooting herself in the right leg.

She was arrested and charged with domestic violence. Both injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening, and the couple is expected to be okay.
