Local wood company to sponsor Talladega race

ABBEVILLE, Ala. (WDHN) — Great Southern Wood Preserving, Inc., the parent company of YellaWood will be sponsoring one of the biggest and most competitive tracks in NASCAR this October — Talladega Superspeedway.

“We’re a fairly small company and we have been growing. We have about 1,200 employees and 14 locations. We wanted to have a fun way to pay homage to the growth that this company has enjoyed and Talladega being in our home state, its in our own backyard. What better way to team up with the people in Nascar,”

The company is not a stranger to sponsoring big events. Previously, YellaWood has sponsored the Senior Bowl in Mobile and being involved with the SEC, Auburn, and Troy.

However, the company has had several talks with NASCAR, but this is the first venture into the sport and they have already reached “victory lane.” The company will have the track flooded in yellow with signs around the track, a yellow 100×100 booth, banners outside the speedway, and a strong presence on radio and broadcast to display the brand.

Rob Pongonis, with Great Southern Wood Preserving, Inc., says its great for the company to be honored in one of the biggest sporting events. Also, it’s huge for the city.

“It lit a fire under our employees in the company its a lot of excitement. I gotta imagine the people of Abbeville is fired up to know a company like this that’s based out of Abbeville is taking on a big task like this,” Pongonis said.

The YellaWood 500 is set to take place Sunday October 4.
