Local pro-military organization pushes to become largest of its kind

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Various community leaders met at the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce Monday morning the official kickoff of AUSA’s Fort Rucker Wiregrass Chapter Membership Drive.

AUSA serves as the voice of the Army to members of Congress in order to seek funding.

“The larger AUSA is, the more inclined our members of Congress are to give us an audience to speak on behalf of the Army as far as the priorities and the needs,” said retired Colonel Mark Jones, president of AUSA’s Fort Rucker Wiregrass Chapter. “So as we grow, members of Congress are more apt to listen to what is being said”

At the end of the three-month membership drive, organizers hope to basically double its membership to include at least 200 community partners and, in turn, become one of the largest chapters in the nation.

“We have thousands of businesses in the wiregrass that can join, and we can walk the walk and talk the talk and actually show the people in D.C. that we do care about our soldiers and they are important to us and that we can become one of the largest chapters in the country,” said Mike Schmitz, vice president of AUSA Fort Rucker Wiregrass chapter.

If you are a local business owner and would like to become a community partner for only $175 a year, applications and more information can be found at www.ausawiregrass.org.
