WICKSBURG, Ala. (WDHN) — The Wicksburg High School band has been selected to perform at the Alabama Music Educators Conference in Montgomery Thursday.
This is the first year the Golden Regiment Marching Band was selected, and they are also the only small band chosen.
“This is my 38th year of teaching,” Director of Bands Lori Hart said. “It’s always been a dream that I would get to have a group of students to perform at this level.”
For the ending of their concert, the band will incorporate the fifth and sixth-grade choirs as well as the high school choir.
Faculty and community members will also join the band on stage for a song about inspiring others.
“It’s kind of been our theme throughout the band this year to be a light to others,” Hart said. “We want to find those young directors that are just starting out and find themselves in a community like Wicksburg, and inspire them with hard work and dedication and love you can have programs like what we have here.”
For Hart, being able to have her band perform at the conference is emotional because she takes pride in seeing everyone else take pride in the program.
“A lot of times in small schools music is not an emphasis,” Hart said. “Here it has been due in part to the wonderful administration, and the faculty members that we have here have been so supportive. The band parent organization, we could not work without them. They are the heartbeat of this.”
Hart said she has a feeling that this may lead to other opportunities for the band to perform at other events.
