Suspect on the run after Ozark shooting

Local News

OZARK, Ala. (WDHN) — One man is behind bars and another is on the run after a shooting took place Tuesday evening.

The shooting happened on the 1300 block of Johntown Road in Ozark where police responded to shots being fired. However, no one was injured.

They do have one suspect in custody, but one is still at large.

“Two subjects — they were identified as Devonte Smith, 18 years old, and Samuel Shelton, 19 years old — engaged in a dispute with one of the victims and resulted in both suspects branching handguns and firing several rounds towards the victim’s vehicle,” said Michael Bryan, Ozark Police Department’s investigations commander.

Inside the vehicle were two adults and a toddler.

“Once investigators arrived they processed the crime scene and collected statements from the victims and a witness in the area that observed the shooting,” Bryan said,

A “Be On the Lookout” alert was then issued for both suspects.

“Within hours, Samuel Shelton, one of the suspects, was subsequently located and arrested for four counts of attempted murder and intimidating a witness,” Bryan said.

Law enforcement officials are still actively searching for Smith.

“I would like the citizens to know the Ozark Police Department and the district attorney’s office is committed to being proactive in prosecuting such cases where the public plays such an integral part in bringing justice to these such cases,” Bryan said.
