Public funding at risk if census participation doesn’t improve

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — With time running out, census coordinator Lori Wilcoxon is urging citizens to get their census filled out.

She said many people don’t understand how important the census is.

From healthcare to schools, to city and county commissioners, she said money could be lost if people don’t participate.

The goal is to reach 90 percent participation in Geneva, Houston, Henry and other Wiregrass counties.

“It’s all the things that’s gonna bring us federal funding for the next 10 years so it’s vitally important that we get this done in the next 45 days,” Wilcoxon said.

According to Alabama Counts, the deadline to complete the census is Sept. 30.
