Police: ‘Operation Clean Sweep’ effective in reducing Dothan’s gun crime

Local News

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Last month, the Dothan Police Department held “Operation Clean Sweep,” patrolling and combing through areas with calls of gunfire.

Authorities ended up arresting 73 people and seized 31 guns.

Since then, the DPD said there hasn’t been any gun crime.

In fact, police say it’s been effective in lowering gun crime in areas they have hit.

“We want to do this periodically for as long as it takes,” Lt. Scott Owens said. “We want to make sure that we’re unpredictable when people are out there committing crimes. They don’t know when we’re gonna be out there and when we’re not. That’s the most effective way to run an operation like this.”

Owens said he wants people to know that gun crime is being noticed, and it’s not going to go unpunished.
