HARTFORD, Ala. (WDHN) — Flames erupted from a five-bedroom mobile home at around 4:30 Thursday morning on Geneva County Road 44, several miles north of Hartford.

Hartford along with fire engines from Slocomb and Wicksburg responded to the blaze. Eight members of the Bateman family escaped through thick smoke.

“I got on the ramp and heard someone yell where’s mommy and felt my wife race by me to get back in the burning structure and got her out. It was a terrifying moment and it really just went from there,” Alex Bateman said.

A family puppy died in the fire. Alex Bateman said authorities believe the fire was caused by an electrical short.
