DOTHAN Ala. (WDHN) — It is officially flu season, which means flu shots are widely available.
Doctors and pediatricians say it is important for adults and children to get the shot.
“Children who have lots of chronic medical problems like asthma, diabetes, sickle cell, those kids should definitely get the flu vaccine as well just to prevent complications with their underlying illnesses,” pediatrician Michael Ramsey said.
Influenza can cause fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, congestion, and other things.
“Influenza is spread through droplets from an infected person,” said Johna Cotton, Alabama Department of Public Health Director. “Like I said, it affects the nose, throat, and lungs.”
Flu shots are readily available at places like CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Walmart, and other places.
Some stores like Winn-Dixie will even give patients coupons for getting the shot.
“We have the $10 coupon for flu shots,” Winn-Dixie Pharmacist Jeff King said. “We also have a $10 coupon for ammonia when given in combination with the flu.”
A lot of people are concerned about the shot being dangerous. However, doctors say there’s nothing to be concerned about, and it’s just a common misconception.
“There’s a lot of misconceptions about flu vaccines,” Ramsey said. “First of all, the flu shot does not have any live virus in it and does not cause cold symptoms, and it doesn’t give you the flu.”
