DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — If you’re still looking for ways to stay busy while in self-isolation gardening can be an easy way to productively pass the time while also adding greenery and potentially some food to your home.
“A lot of people are interested in fruits, vegetables, herbs, and that kind of thing,” Dothan Nursery Owner J.D. Boone said. “A lot of people are interested in tomatoes. A lot of people when they think gardening they think tomatoes, and I’ve got a lot of tomatoes.”
There are different kinds of tomatoes, and if you’ve never done tomatoes J.D. says the easiest ones are the smaller tomatoes because they are a lot easier to grow then the bigger ones.
Another popual item at the nursery right now is squash and zucchini.
“The squash and zucchini is another one that’s easy to grow, whereas the tomatoes grow straight up, squash and zucchini are like watermelon, they’re kind of a vine that spread across the ground. What I’d say about squash and zucchini and your garden, in general, is to just be careful because a lot of people they plant to many plants and the next thing they know is they’re getting 20 squash a day, and they’re like I don’t know what to do with all this squash.”
Customers also like sweet peppers and a lot of people like hot peppers.
“If you like really really hot peppers, Ghost Peppers, but then we’ve got the regular peppers. The Poblano, that’s a really big one that you’ll see people stuff with meat, cheese that kind of thing. We’ve got Jalapeno, Bell peppers, all that kind of stuff, so vegetables are a big deal right now, we’ve got plenty of them.”
Boone said the way they sell things has been customers come in and they show you the item, but for now, they have ramped up the curbside pickup.
“You call in, you email us tell us what you want, we’ll walk around, we’ll find it, we’ll get it all together and when you show up we’ll come put it in your car. So, it’s pretty easy, it’s different because you can’t just show it to somebody, you kind of got to explain what it looks like. We’ve been doing a lot of that and we don’t mind doing it. So, give us a call and we’ll do it for you.”
