OPP, Ala. (WDHN) — A retirement reception was held for Opp’s longtime chief of police Friday.
Mike McDonald joined the department as a patrolman in 1988 and leaves some 31 years later as its chief.
Before working with Opp, McDonald served as a military police officer. He also spent several years working in his hometown as a mobile policeman.
For McDonald, he said leaving law enforcement after nearly a half-century is a bittersweet experience.
“To be honest with you, you’re not going to change the world in law enforcement,” McDonald said. “You’re not going to change society. You have to take a little bite at a time, but if you can remove someone from the general public that’s a danger to the public, I think you’ve done a good day’s work.”
Next week, longtime assistant Opp police Chief Kevin Chance officially assumes the chief’s role.
