Local News

Covington Co. (WDHN)—At Opp Elementary, more than 30 kindergarten-through-fourth-graders are taking part in this summer’s reading camp.

With social distancing and health guidelines in effect, Opp City School Superintendent Michael Smithart says it’s a preview of what we can expect when classes
for the 2020-2021 year resumes on Monday, August 17th.

Smithart says State Superintendent, dr. Eric Mackey, is leaving the start date to each school district.

Opp City Schools has approximately 13-hundred students and two-hundred teachers and support personnel.

The pandemic forced classrooms statewide to close down in mid-March.

Superintendent Smithart says his students and parents are more than ready to come back to campus.

Superintendent Smithart says his teachers are also preparing for virtual learning for students whose parents don’t want to send their children to school during the pandemic.
